Kal Zaranec Recognized for Excellence in Golf Course Superintendents Association of America’s EXCEL Program

(Worley, Idaho)  — Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel is proud to announce that Kal Zaranec, Superintendent at its award-winning Circling Raven Golf Course, has graduated from the prestigious EXCEL Leadership Program presented by Nufarm and the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). Zaranec was one of six graduates recognized for completing the three-year program during a session, held April 15-17 in Raleigh and Pinehurst, North Carolina.

During the session, the EXCEL Leadership Program recognized Zaranec for completing the three-year mentorship and networking opportunity. Nineteen EXCEL Program participants in all learned and observed first-hand the preparation and requirements for hosting the USGA’s U.S. Open, which returns to Pinehurst No. 2 June 10-16.

The group also visited Nufarm’s new formulation development lab in Morrisville, NC, to learn about the extensive process of innovating new golf course solutions. EXCEL stands for “Educating” golf industry leaders of tomorrow; cross-training opportunities so they can share what they have learned (“X”); “Creating” community leaders who serve more than take; “Encouraging” future leaders through advisory boards and councils; and developing “Leaders” who will mentor others.

“Even being considered and accepted into the program three years ago was a huge achievement,” Zaranec said. “Now, graduating after three years of leadership training, networking, and visits to some of the top golf courses and sports fields in the country, I couldn’t have asked for a better experience with the EXCEL Leadership Program and the opportunities that were presented.”

The program focuses on leadership in three main areas: “being a leader at home, being a leader at work, and being a leader in the community. I have become more involved with our local GCSAA Chapter, and also joined a volunteer Ski Patrol last winter.” Thanks in part to his EXCEL experience, Zaranic concluded, “We have built a stronger team at Circling Raven, not just within golf maintenance, but with golf operations and other departments we work with.”

“Kal and his team work tirelessly to ensure that they responsibly create and maintain excellent course conditions and beautiful resort grounds,” added Circling Raven Director of Golf Christopher Runyan, PGA. “Not only did he gain industry insights and learn cutting edge innovations, but the program’s management-best-practices focus complements his professional growth.”

Celebrating its 20th Anniversary season in 2024, Circling Raven holds widespread critical esteem including Best Public Course in Idaho, Top 20 U.S. Casino Course, Top American Resort Courses, and Best North Idaho Course. It hosted the LPGA’s Epson Tour for three years (2021-23) through which top women golf professionals from around the world unanimously praised the course conditions and its design, the masterpiece of golf course architect Gene Bates, ASGCA. Bates’ ingenious holes and course routing at Circling Raven are extolled for their natural contours that move brilliantly through 620 acres of woodlands, wetlands, and tumbling Palouse terrain.

Registration for Golf’s Ultimate Charitable Challenge Now Open with New Ways to Participate

Monterey, Calif. Youth on Course – the nonprofit organization providing youth with access to life-changing opportunities through golf today announced the schedule for its 9th annual 100 Hole Hike fundraising initiative. The 2024 Season is highlighted by three Premier Hikes, teeing off on the East Coast at The Cradle at Pinehurst Resort and culminating on the West Coast at The Hay at Pebble Beach Resort, and includes the first-ever Premier Canadian Hike at The Nest at Cabot Cape Breton in Inverness, Nova Scotia.

“The Youth on Course 100 Hole Hike is a key driver to expand access to the sport,” said Youth on Course CEO Adam Heieck. “Since its inception, we’ve raised millions of dollars that directly go to subsidizing rounds of golf for youth. We’re grateful to partner with such venerable golf destinations like Pinehurst Resort, Pebble Beach Golf Resorts, and new for this season, Cabot Cape Breton. This year we’ve rolled out new ways to participate, including a team format, that allows fundraisers to play only a portion of the 100 holes, creating a fun competition and a less physically intensive way to be involved. We look forward to partnering with golfers across the U.S. and Canada to increase access to the sport.”

Youth on Course supporters nationwide will be challenged to complete 100 holes of golf in one day and secure donations to increase affordability and accessibility for youth interested in golf.

“Since 2015, the 100 Hole Hike initiative has become the most impactful fundraising initiative to support our members through access,” Jeff Clark, Chief Development Officer for Youth on Course, said. “Those who participate will not only feel satisfied helping youth but will also know they themselves can overcome any mental and physical challenges in their lives to do so.”

This year, registered participants can select between three Premier Hikes, eight National Hikes, and more than 10 Hikes organized by regional Allied Golf Associations. The three Premier Hikes require a minimum fundraising goal of $10,000 for each golfer, and the nine National Hikes require a minimum of $1,000.

The Premier Hikes include The Cradle at Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, N.C., on Aug. 26, The Nest at Cabot Cape Breton in Inverness, Nova Scotia, on Oct. 4, and The Hay at Pebble Beach Resort in Pebble Beach, California, on Nov. 11. Each participant will be provided with overnight accommodations, and additional incentives for reaching minimums and beyond, including a stay-and-play at Pebble Beach Resorts for U.S. participants, and a stay-and-play at Cabot Cliffs for those participating in Canada.

“The Cradle was built to celebrate the fun of the game of golf and to be enjoyed by all levels of golfers,” says Tom Pashley, Pinehurst Resort President. “The 100 Hole Hike plays an important role in ensuring future generations have the same opportunities to grow in the game. We’re excited for The Cradle to be such a big part in helping make the game more accessible to all who want to play it.”

“The Hay has become a focal point of our property that presents a welcoming atmosphere for beginners, and challenging shot making for advanced players,” says David Stivers, Pebble Beach Company’s Chief Executive Officer. “Partnering with Youth on Course is a great source of pride for us as we support their mission of opening doors for young people both on and off the course.”

Those participating in any of the eight National Hikes will be incentivized with a Youth on Course-branded water bottle, golf towel, and Seamus headcover when they raise $2,500, a $500 voucher to PGA Tour Superstore when they reach $5,000 in donations, or an invitation to stay-and-play at Pebble Beach Resorts if they reach $10,000 or more.

The schedule for the eight National Hikes is as follows:

  • Aug. 26 – Golden Gate Park Golf Course – San Francisco, Calif.
  • Sept. 9 – Corica Park Golf Course – Alameda, Calif.
  • Sept. 13 – Mariners Point Golf Center – Foster City, Calif.
  • Sept. 16 – 3’s Greenville Golf & Grubhouse – Greenville, S.C.
  • Sept. 23 – Maidstone Club Short Course – Long Island, N.Y.
  • Oct. 3 – Northwood Golf Club – Sonoma, Calif.
  • Oct. 14 – Topgolf Los Angeles – El Segundo, Calif.
  • Nov. 7 – Butler Pitch & Putt Par 3 – Austin, Texas

Supporters may also participate at any course across the country by gathering teams in multiples of four or donating any amount to a Hiker via the leaderboard. Learn more about additional ways to get involved here

The Youth on Course 100 Hole Hike evolved from a 2011 event created by Jim Colton and has experienced exponential year-over-year growth since its implementation by Youth on Course in 2015. Since its inception, millions of dollars have been raised supporting affordable youth golf access, providing over 1.2M subsidized rounds of golf.

Founded in 2006, Youth on Course now has nearly 200,000 members who can play golf for $5 or less at more than 2,000 courses throughout the United States, Canada, and Australia.

Beyond affordable access, Youth on Course launched an Alumni Network earlier this year, connecting over 75,000 young adults nationwide who share a connection with golf. For $20 per year, Alumni can access exclusive benefits and opportunities valued at over $500 through the Youth on Course mobile app, including complimentary subscriptions to NBC Sports Next’s GolfPass and Peacock streaming, discounts on renowned golf brands like TaylorMade Golf and LinkSoul and exclusive app access to ParPoints.

BENTON HARBOR, Michigan – Local Veterans convened at Harbor Shores Monday to participate in a PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) clinic at the 2024 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, led by PGA of America Golf Professionals and Corebridge Financial Team members Tracy Phillips and David Hutsell.

As Phillips and Hutsell prepare for the most prestigious Major in senior golf, they led the clinic with support from 13 additional PGA of America Professionals from the Michigan PGA Section. Together they taught the fundamentals of the game and provided Veterans the opportunity to connect with one another while onsite at a major championship.

“This is something that we as PGA Golf Professionals can certainly do to help,” said Phillips. “We’re the recipients of their hard work and sacrifice. They gave us the freedom to allow us to do this. For me, It’s kind of the icing on the cake in terms of being able to play in two major championships and also work with Veterans.”

Phillips, the Director of Instruction at Cedar Ridge Country Club in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, made his PGA Championship debut at age 61 last week at Valhalla Golf Club. This week he will compete in his sixth KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship.

Hutsell, the Lead Instructor at Baltimore Country Club in Baltimore, Maryland, has played in 10 PGA Tour events, two PGA Championships (2010, ‘11) and is ready to compete at Harbor Shores this week. But first, he was helping Veterans such as Army Veteran Michael Gower, who just competed in the 9th PGA HOPE Secretary’s Cup in Louisville, Kentucky, ahead of the PGA Championship, as part of Team Michigan. He spent Monday at Harbor Shores enjoying the clinic.

“PGA HOPE means I have another option of something that I can do, and it was really cool being here at the clinic,” said Gower, a PGA HOPE graduate. “Golf has given me a whole new realm of possibility of getting outside, especially with my son. We just got him his first set of clubs for his birthday. It used to just be video games inside, but now I can take him and go outside and play golf. Ultimately, what most Veterans love is to be able to be outside and do something. HOPE helps us do that.”

PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) is the flagship military program of PGA REACH, the charitable foundation of the PGA of America. PGA HOPE introduces golf to Veterans and Active Duty Military to enhance their physical, mental, social and emotional well-being.

This year, the program plans to impact more than 17,000 Veterans through a developmental 6-to 8-week curriculum led by PGA of America Professionals trained in adaptive golf and military cultural competency. The cost of programming is free to all Veterans.

The KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, the most historic and prestigious Major Championship in senior golf, will be contested May 23-26 and broadcast on Golf Channel and NBC. The action can also be taken in through srpgachampionship.com and by following @seniorpgachamp on Facebook, Instagram and X.

Heathrow Legacy is the first private club in Central Florida to offer TopTracer Range; Renovations also include 18 new Bermuda greens on the Garl Course, upgrades to both clubhouses, 6 new pickleball courts, pool deck refresh and irrigation

Editors:

HEATHROW, Fla. – A pillar of the North Orlando community, Heathrow Legacy Country Club is installing $3 million worth of upgrades at the historic club.

Among the extensive renovations are 10 brand new covered and elegantly furnished TopTracer Range outdoor bays, as well as 18 new Champion Bermuda greens on the Garl Course. Significant golf course irrigation improvements, designed to enhance drainage and elevate course conditions to new heights, were also installed.

Heathrow Legacy is now the first private facility in Central Florida to install TopTracer Range, the No. 1 rated range technology, which transforms the traditional driving range experience. The technology provides instant feedback on ball speed, trajectory, distance, and more. TopTracer also enables golfers of all levels to enjoy interactive games and practice sessions, with precise data on performance.

The club offers members and guests access to two clubhouses set just two miles apart, with 36 holes of golf that pay homage to namesake designers Ron Garl (Garl Course) and Tom Fazio (Fazio Course). At the Heathrow Clubhouse, renovations were made to the bar, patio, fixtures and HVAC. Meanwhile, the Legacy Clubhouse will soon undergo a complete remodel of the lobby, boardroom, bar and dining space, including new fixtures, flooring, furniture and decor.

Heathrow Legacy members also enjoy exclusive access to The Racquet Club, a sprawling onsite tennis and fitness facility, that will add six new pickleball courts this summer. The 13-court tennis facility has hosted the likes of Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Jimmy Connors and Billie Jean King. In addition, a brand new pool deck was just installed.

Heathrow Legacy was the first club ever owned by Concert Golf Partners, a boutique owner-operator of 33 upscale private golf and country clubs nationwide, with its national headquarters located along the Garl Course. Concert consistently makes annual capital investment in its clubs. The upgrades are aimed at enhancing amenities, service levels and the overall member experience, while building and maintaining a thriving club environment.

“This multi-million dollar investment in Heathrow Legacy is part of the ongoing commitment by Concert Golf Partners to continually reinvest in our properties each year, as we preserve and enhance our private clubs for our members nationwide,” said Concert Golf Senior Vice President of Operations Aaron Straub. “The renovations at Heathrow Legacy, including the installation of TopTracer Range and pristine Champion Bermuda greens, have further elevated the upscale amenities available at this iconic club.”

The challenging 18-hole Garl Course at Heathrow C.C. has seen several PGA Tour players call the club “home” over the years, including Chris DiMarco, Jim Thorpe, Matt Kuchar, Zach Johnson, Payne Stewart, Sam Ryder and Fulton Allem. Host of nine US Open Qualifiers, the Par 71, 6,888-yard course has a slope of 133 and a 73.8 rating. Featuring water hazards on 16 holes, the course is accentuated by its signature island green on the par-3, 117-yard 12th hole; and an unique island fairway on No. 17, where you must clear danger on both your tee shot and approach. Golf facilities include complete clubhouse services, a pro-shop, a driving area and chipping green. A professional instructional staff offers tailored individual and group instruction and a variety of clinics.

Certified as an Audubon International Signature Certified Sanctuary golf course, Fazio Course architect Tom Fazio has praised it as among his best efforts. The 7,160-yard par 72 course carries a 74.5 rating and 132 slope carved around a dense forest of lush, mature trees with spectacular topography, dramatic slopes, rises and knolls unique to Florida. Hole No. 12 is known as the “Tiger Trap,” as Tiger Woods once appeared out of the surrounding forest to challenge golfers to a closest-to-the-pin contest in a famous Buick TV commercial.

The clubs also offer indoor and outdoor dining year-round, in-house sitter care for kids, and a variety of events and classes.

New Design by Acclaimed Architects Coore & Crenshaw Is a Complete Reimagination of What Was Previously America’s Longest Golf Course

(BOLTON, Mass.) – The International – New England’s preeminent 36-hole, “pure golf” private club – announces the reimagined version of its Pines course is on schedule to welcome limited member play this fall.

Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, the renowned golf course design team and founders of the firm Coore & Crenshaw, are wrapping up the project they began in 2022. Over the last two years, they have created a new golf course that takes greater advantage of the land’s interesting topography, unique landforms and mature vegetation. Not a single hole corridor or green site remains from the prior version of The Pines, which was best known for decades as America’s longest golf course. This emphasis on length has been replaced by Coore & Crenshaw’s signature preference for golf courses that look natural, are strategic and can be enjoyed by all levels of play.

It is believed The Pines will be the first new 18-hole course to open in Massachusetts in more than a decade.

“Bill, Ben, shapers Ryan Farrow and Zach Varty, and the rest of the Coore & Crenshaw team have worked their magic, taking an exceptional site and crafting what we strongly believe will be considered one of the country’s best new golf courses,” said Paul Celano, Director of Golf at The International. “Their deep admiration for courses built during the early 20th century, the so-called ‘Golden Age of Architecture,’ is an ideal match for our vision of a golf-first experience at The International that preserves and honors the club’s 120-year history.”

The Pines is only the second course Coore & Crenshaw have designed and built in New England; the first is the highly acclaimed Old Sandwich Golf Club in Plymouth, Massachusetts, which opened in 2005.

Further evidencing the club’s appreciation for golf’s golden era, The Pines will be one of the region’s few courses to feature fescue grass on tees, fairways and in the rough. Fescue grass courses are typically found in Scotland and Ireland, places where the game was first played. These turf conditions, when combined with Coore & Crenshaw’s elevated course architecture, will allow for greater shot diversity and foster an ever-evolving, engaging golf experience on holes framed by sandy waste areas, wispy fescue and stately pitch pines.

Drone footage documenting the transformation of several holes can be viewed on The International’s YouTube channel.

Sodding and grow-in of the fescue playing surfaces will continue in the coming months. Other final project tasks include installing new bunker sand, edging perimeters of bunkers, trimming and clearing trees, establishing fairway / rough lines, seeding the practice putting green, and initial mowing of tees, fairways and bentgrass greens.

The Pines was originally designed by Geoffrey Cornish with help from legendary amateur golf champion Francis Ouimet. When it opened in 1955, the course measured 8,040 yards from the back tees and combined steeply pitched greens with challenging bunkers. Nearly two decades later, famed architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr. was hired to soften several greens and bunkers but he also lengthened the course to an astounding 8,325 yards.

This calling card began to lose its luster this century, however, as golfers became less focused on course difficulty as a measuring stick for quality. Instead, they have signaled a preference for courses that are strategic, walkable and enjoyable to play for all skill levels.

“The Pines will check all of these important boxes,” said Celano. “With our recently renovated Oaks course, we now combine 36 holes of exceptional golf with a welcoming club environment and culture rooted in a deep respect for the game and its treasured traditions.”

The International is building a membership that will share in the responsibility of shepherding a new era at the club. About The International

Originally opened in 1901, The International has evolved over the past century into one of the finest golf clubs in New England, and the only private 36-hole club in Greater Boston. Owner Escalante Golf has made significant investments in the club’s Oaks and Pines Courses since its 2021 acquisition. A renovation of the Tom Fazio-designed Oaks was led by renowned architect Tripp Davis and primarily focused on improving tees and bunkers. The Pines is undergoing more extensive work – a complete reimagination by the world’s most famous golf course design team, Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. When completed, The Pines will be reborn as a more natural, strategic and playable layout that better leverages the site’s interesting topography, unique landforms and mature vegetation.

(LINCOLN, Neb.) – Landscapes Unlimited has been selected to oversee an extensive renovation of Sherrill Park Golf Course No. 2 in Richardson, Tex., 30 minutes north of Dallas.

Central to the project is the remodeling of tees, fairways, bunkers and greens, and installation of a state-of-the-art irrigation system.  Landscapes Unlimited and Greenscapes Six are collaborating closely on planning and construction of the layout originally designed by Leon Howard in 1980 and re-designed by D.A. Weibring and Steve Wolfard in 2021.

The course is Avid Golfer Magazine’s “most anticipated renovation” among the 76 public golf courses in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and was ranked the No. 4 public course by the Dallas Morning News.  It is owned and operated by the City of Richardson under the on-site leadership of Head Golf Professional Ronny Glanton who’s introduced thousands of golfers to the game during his 40 years at the facility.

Despite Sherrill Park No. 2’s wide fairways and an abundance of scoring opportunities, trouble occasionally pops up on the 4,810- to 6,375-yard, par 70 No. 2 course.  The opening hole requires a carry over a creek traversing the fairway to a severely sloped green that makes putts fiendish.  At nearly 300 yards, the sixth hole is also bold with water left of the green and a huge bunker protecting it.  The final hole, a par four, plays tough on approach shots facing scary greenside bunkers.

“Sherrill Park No. 2’s layout is interesting, fun and often shows relative bite to golfers of all skill levels,” says Larry Barefield, Senior Project Manager of Landscapes Unlimited.  “Working alongside Greenscapes Six and its experienced team brings together a treasure trove of talent to lift No. 2 up to modern standards.”

More challenging than its sister track, Sherrill Park Golf Course No. 1 stretches from 5,010 to 7,016 yards.  At Par 72, it’s especially known for the first hole that doglegs sharply to the right at 375 yards, and the monstrous 14th hole that plays into the wind with water along the right of the fairway and green.

About Landscapes Unlimited

Forty-seven years young and family owned and operated, Landscapes Unlimited is the recognized leader in golf course development, construction, renovation and advisory services.  Its regional experts leverage contemporary best practices, fiscal prudency and a culture promoting unwavering success. Led By McLay-Kidd, The Renovation Further Reinvests in the Growing Community

TETON VALLEY, IDAHO – Today, Tributary, a 1,500-acre private residential community on the west side of the Teton mountain range, unveiled renovations to its 18-hole championship course designed by celebrated Scottish architect David McLay-Kidd of DMK Golf Designs. Consistently ranking in Golfweek’s Best, the private course, which opened in 2008, underwent a strategic overhaul and bunker reconstruction to create a more refined golf experience for Tributary’s homeowners

“Surrounded by multiple mountain ranges, Tributary experiences all four seasons, making it important for our team to monitor the course’s condition and reinvest in the game,” said Jeff Heilbrun, Director of Real Estate. “This renovation has enhanced playability for all levels of players, providing a new experience as Tributary continues to grow.”

Known best for his award-winning courses at Bandon Dunes and the Castle Course at St. Andrews, McLay-Kidd worked alongside the Tributary team to take a fresh look at the course’s bunkers, which had experienced natural erosion and sand loss due to the area’s weather changes. With the course originally housing 150 bunkers, McLay-Kidd took the opportunity to reanalyze the strategic purpose around each bunker, correcting those that had changed shape and removing over 35 to help improve shots and make sight lines off the tee more inviting. Contractor Ridgetop Golf also installed Profile Flexterra solution for erosion control in all existing bunkers.

“Our ideal course is one that works naturally with the land’s terrain while remaining a perfect blend of playable and challenging,” said McLay-Kidd. “We wanted to ensure this renovation had every golfer in mind and was the perfect middle ground for modest and experienced golfers to play the game together. It is, now, as it has been since its conception, one of the country’s best-kept secrets.”

The 18-hole, par-72 championship golf course plays 7,613 yards from the back tees, fitting seamlessly into the community. As a part of Tributary’s 500-acre fen, woven through the course, are 50 acres of wetlands that provide habitat for native flora and fauna. Striking views of the Big Hole Mountains and the Grand Tetons are found at every hole, with the 16th teeing off facing directly towards the majestic landscape.

An unmatched, four-season, private club community, Tributary is located on the west side of the Teton Mountain Range, only 30 minutes from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, one of the nation’s most celebrated outdoor recreational destinations. It offers buyers and owners myriad amenities in addition to world-class golf, including a Clubhouse for community gathering with a restaurant and bar; a wellness facility with a fitness center and spa; a pool and hot tub boasting mountain views; seven fishing ponds; endless trails for cross-country skiing and walking; a recreation barn with access to hatchet throwing, e-biking, paddleboarding, and more; and a two-mile, elevated boardwalk through the 500-acre fen for wildlife viewing.

In addition to this golf course renovation, Tributary has seen a large reinvestment in the community through the launch of its second phase last summer,  North Fork. Located in the heart of the community, the 61 homesites offer 360-degree views of the surrounding mountain ranges, quick access to a centrally located 5-acre lake for fishing and paddleboarding, and the option to have up to two club memberships. Tributary homesites start at $750,000.

For more information on homeownership opportunities at Tributary, please reach out to Sara Beth Judson at 307-690-4712 or sbjudson@tributaryidaho.com, or visit tributaryidaho.com.
