In this week’s episode, I interview my good friend Eric Cogorno, a renowned golf instructor with over 20,000 lessons and an online instructor to over 200,000 players. With over 100k followers on Instagram and almost 300k on YouTube, Eric is the go-to source for golf instruction. His YouTube videos alone have amassed almost 75 million views. Eric has been featured in Forbes, and pioneered the behind-the-reverse Slice Sequence, the Closed Coil System, Lethal Lag, and many more training programs.

Eric Cogorno’s dad inspired him to become a golfer when he was twelve. He always saw his father go out with his friends for a few rounds on the weekends, and, as most boys do, he wanted to be just like him. So, his dad bought him a junior set of clubs, and he got to work. By the age of eighteen, Eric attended college at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and worked at a local golf course. As fate would have it, one of the professional instructors came in one day and told him how he’d just made $50 from teaching a golf lesson. It wasn’t long after that that Eric decided he wanted to become a professional golf coach himself. Naturally, Eric began his coaching career at the Bethlehem Golf Club, eventually progressing to assistant pro.

AI-powered technology identified key swing elements from Schauffele, as well as Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Phil Mickelson

DENVER – GOLFTEC, the world leader in game improvement, was featured prominently during the CBS broadcast of the PGA Championship, to showcase the unique swing elements of each of the last eight PGA Championship winners — including first-time major champion Xander Schauffele.

Analysis focused on how players generate power and consistency — including Schauffele’s shaft angle at contact, Rory McIlRoy’s head tilt to support power generation, and a comparison of wrist angle at the top of the swing among the previous seven champions.

OptiMotion, powered by a proprietary AI model, is the wireless and sensorless motion-capture technology that measures 15 specific joint centers within the body and collects more than 4,000 data points in every swing, providing insights that allow GOLFTEC coaches to build easy-to-understand, practical improvement plans.

The technology can be used anywhere on course during broadcasts — from on course to practice areas. With GOLFTEC’s digital library of more than 14 million golf swings, OptiMotion enabled CBS analysts to provide viewers with biomechanical swing data about hip turn, hip sway, shoulder tilt and other key elements.

OptiMotion highlights from the PGA Championship included:

  • Analysis of Schauffele’s forward shaft lean, which generates significant compression and contributes to consistency and length
  • Focus on McIlRoy’s 52-degree head tilt, which is one of the reasons why he can hit up on the ball so well, contributing to his length and draw
  • Comparison of the difference in flex of the lead wrist at the top of the swing among recent winners, including Collin Morikawa (27 degrees), Phil Mickelson (12), Justin Thomas (4) and Brooks Koepka (8)

“OptiMotion plays such an important role in breaking down and harnessing key aspects of the swing for every player at every level, so we were excited to see the different ways that CBS used our technology,” said Joe Assell, CEO of GOLFTEC Enterprises and a longtime PGA Member. “The PGA Championship is such an important week, as PGA teaching professionals play such a key role in helping people improve, and viewers got a chance to see how our technology can enhance that.”

Operating across 262 locations globally, GOLFTEC allows members to be taught by the best coaches, practice with the latest technology and get fitted into the right clubs — a system that has helped GOLFTEC students improve by an average of seven shots and gain more than 20 yards off the tee.

In addition to OptiMotion, GOLFTEC centers feature SKYTRAK+ launch monitors, and offer private lessons and a custom club fitting program to provide members access to the latest equipment from leading brands like Callaway, TaylorMade, Titleist, PING, Mizuno and more.

About GOLFTEC

GOLFTEC stands as the world leader in golf improvement, with a global presence of more than 260 locations worldwide and a dedicated team of more than 1,000 Certified Personal Coaches. Founded in 1995, GOLFTEC has been unwavering in its mission to help individuals play better golf. Through the fusion of world-class golf instructors and cutting-edge teaching systems, GOLFTEC has been instrumental in guiding hundreds of thousands of golfers toward achieving their goals. On Course Vlog // How low can Ian go?

Today, Ian continues his series of chasing red numbers. With the season started in Ontario Canada. Ian takes us to his home club Brampton Golf Club where he tries to bring his scoring averages down by focusing methodically on breaking par. Playing tournaments again, Ian knows he goes under par frequently., but how can he achieve this feat on a more consistent basis?

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky  – The 106th PGA Championship is underway at Valhalla Golf Club, and by week’s end another name will be etched into the historic Wanamaker Trophy.

There are more than 30,000 PGA of America Golf Professionals, and over 20 of them are representing the PGA of America on the broadcast crews of ESPN, CBS and Sirius XM Radio as the world tunes into the second Major of the season.

End-to-end broadcast and streaming coverage across CBS Sports, ESPN, ESPN+ and Paramount+ will total over 250 hours of live and exclusive programming. Add in PGAChampionship.com and fans could easily spend all week enjoying the action.

Among the broadcasters will be PGA of America Past President Suzy Whaley, PGA, and 2024 PGA of America Teacher & Coach of the Year Joe Hallett, PGA.

Whaley, a PGA Master Professional and the president of Golf Nation, will be an on-course reporter for ESPN. She’ll be walking the grounds of Valhalla Golf Club, a championship venue that carries a lot of meaning in her career.

“It’s exciting to have the chance to cover the PGA Championship from behind-the-scenes,” said Whaley. “Valhalla is special to me. In 2003, I was the first woman to qualify and compete at the PGA Professional Championship at Valhalla. This year, I look forward to sharing stories and supporting the Corebridge Financial Team of PGA of America Golf Professionals who recently qualified for this major championship through the 2024 PGA Professional Championship.”

Whaley made Association history again in 2018, becoming the first woman president of the PGA of America.

Hallet, a PGA Master Professional and the Director of Instruction at Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn., also joins the ESPN broadcast to provide coaching expertise and insight.

Alongside fellow PGA of America Golf Professional Nathalie Sheehan, PGA, Hallett provides on-course commentary and highlights unique shots players face at Valhalla, as well interviewing coaches to see what select players are focusing on.

“This is such an exciting week,” said Hallett. “Great golf on a great venue. The real fun is watching the best in the world play and showing a glimpse of how they got so good, or how they hit certain shots. Our goal is to explain to viewers in a way they can improve their own games at home with some simple concepts.”

A PGA of America Golf Professional for 28 years, Hallett is a GOLF Magazine Top 100 instructor and a Golf Digest Top 50 instructor, including holding the top spot in Golf Digest’s “Best Teacher in Every State” in Tennessee for seven consecutive years. He has coached some of the top LPGA players in the world, including seven-time Major Champion and LPGA Hall of Famer Inbee Park and two-time Rolex World No. 1 and 2023 US Solheim Cup Captain Stacy Lewis. Hallett was also named to the Team USA coaching staff for the 2023 Solheim Cup.

Hallet and Whaley are joined by several PGA of America Golf Professionals on the ESPN and ESPN+ crews: Gary Christian, PGA; Graham DeLaet, PGA; David Duval, PGA; Matt Every, PGA; Billy Kratzert, PGA; Andy North, PGA; Geoff Ogilvy, PGA; Steve Scott, PGA; Nathalie Sheehan, PGA; Jeff Sluman, PGA; Paul Stankowski, PGA; Curtis Strange, PGA; Scott Verplank, PGA; Mark Wilson, PGA.

PGA of America Members on the CBS Sports and Paramount+ teams include Michael Breed, PGA and Brian Crowell, PGA. Also on the team is former PGA of America Independent Director Dottie Pepper.

Meanwhile, SiriusXM is airing the talents of Mark Carenvale, PGA; Rocco Mediate, PGA; Annika Sorenstam, PGA; and Johnson Wagner, PGA.

Dave Marr III, whose namesake father was both the 1981 Ryder Cup Captain and 1965 PGA Champion, serves as the regular host of PGA of America Radio on SiriusXM.

The PGA Championship will conclude May 19 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. You can stream, watch or listen on the networks of CBS, CBS Sports Network, Paramount, ESPN, ESPN+ and SiriusXM Radio.
