Golf In Orlando Barely Touched By Hurricane Wilma, And Is Open For Business

October 26, 2005

ORLANDO, FL (October 25, 2005) – While Hurricane Wilma was powerful enough to shut down golf in Orlando for one day, its’ impact in Central Florida wasn’t severe enough to stop golfers beyond that one day.

Nearly all of the 24 golf courses in the GolfOrlando cooperative marketing organization reopened for business Tuesday following a day of tropical storm winds and rain on Monday. Four courses suffered minor flooding that kept the doors closed on Tuesday, but three planned to reopen on Wednesday and the fourth on Thursday.

Wilma, a record-setting, late-season storm, raced across South Florida Monday, leaving a trail of destruction in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. The Orlando area was affected by the outer bands of the storm, with some areas receiving as much as eight inches of rain. But by mid-afternoon the sun was shining and the brisk winds had diminished considerably.

"We are definitely open for business in Orlando," said GolfOrlando President Dave Scott, General Manager of Shingle Creek Golf Club. "We feel for our neighbors in South Florida, as we dealt with similar issues last summer. But we in Orlando were the fortunate ones this time. We came out of this practically unscathed, and with only one lost day of business.

"So if you are wondering if golf in Orlando is feeling any lasting affects from Wilma, the answer is a very loud ‘NO.’"

GolfOrlando is a 5-year-old cooperative marketing venture within Orlando’s golf community to promote Central Florida as a premier golf destination. It’s theme for the upcoming season is "GolfOrlando – Golf’s Ultimate Theme Park."
