World’s largest women’s amateur golf tournament celebrates 10 year anniversary
PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL, October 13, 2005 … Kris Fenwick, a member of the Executive Women’s Golf Association’s (EWGA) and President of Boise/Treasure Valley, ID Chapter, captured the EWGA Championship, the largest women’s amateur golf tournament in the world. Fenwick, who played her way into this year’s championship at the Pacific Northwest Sectional semi-finals, posted a 36-hole score of 157 en route to a six-stroke victory over Pat Beljan-Ayres of the Port St. Lucie-Treasure Coast Florida Chapter.
This year’s two-day championship was held Sept. 22-24 at Crystal Mountain Resort, Thompsonville, MI featuring a field of 164 women. Winners were crowned in five flights and a scramble division. Nearly 2,300 players — a record number of entrants — competed in over 110 EWGA Chapter qualifying events and 12 sectional semi-final tournaments throughout the association prior to the two-day finale.
"I am very proud to represent EWGA as its 2005 Champion. I have never played in such a competitive tournament that was also so much fun. My playing partners were genuinely supportive of each other with lots of praise and high fives," said Fenwick. "You would have thought we were a scramble team. I kept thinking that this was exactly what EWGA was all about!" Fenwick is a dentist practicing in the greater Boise, Idaho area.
Karen Davis, Director of Golf Education and Player Development for EWGA and a member of the PGA of America (Class A) and LPGA (Class A2) said, "It’s fantastic to have this opportunity for women of all playing ability levels to compete in a real Championship quality event. Some of these women didn’t have the opportunity to compete in sports growing up so it’s great that the EWGA continues to open up opportunities for women in events like the EWGA Championship."
In the scramble competition, the EWGA’s Madison, WI Chapter successfully captured first place with a two-stroke victory in the 36-hole competition. Ginger Zimmerman, Attorney with Murphy & Desmond SC and spokesperson for the Madison scramble team which additionally included Shelly Armstrong, Sarah Dekaay, Terri Redmond said, "We had a great experience. The golf course was absolutely beautiful, the competition was well run and we really enjoyed the scramble format and the strategizing we had to do. We really had a good time getting to know our fellow competitors and socializing with them as well. We can’t wait to return next year and defend our title!"
Nancy Maul, Sonoma-Marin-Napa, CA Chapter member and Tournament/Marketing Director, Northern California Section of the PGA of America said, "It is rewarding to see women from across the country, with varying skill levels, come together to compete. Having qualified at Chapter and Sectional tournaments, these players were focused on competing while enjoying the camaraderie of the overall Championship experience." Maul, a third year member of the EWGA Championship Committee and 2005 Committee Chair continued, "We would like to thank Jim and Chris MacInnes of Crystal Mountain Resorts and their staff. They made the entire experience just wonderful. Everything was top notch from the golf course, to the food, to the resort accommodations, to the service."
